Four Barrel Coffee

I was the Art Director for Four Barrel Coffee from 2013–2016. During that time, I created a wide range of marketing and branding pieces that helped shape the company’s distinct identity.

One of the unique challenges of working with Four Barrel was that they didn’t have or want a traditional logo. Instead, I used hand drawn artwork as the foundation of the brand. This approach gave the visuals a raw, personal feel and set them apart from more polished coffee competitors.

Client: Four Barrel Coffee

Role: Illustration

Applications: Print, Web, Packaging, Merchandise

Our design system relied on a restrained palette of black, white, and gold. Texture and paper choice played a huge role, and whenever other colors were introduced, it was done with clear intent and purpose. Illustrations were gritty and done using ink, while the brand voice leaned into tongue-in-cheek humor with a snarky tone.

The examples below are just a fraction of the work I created, but together they show how our team built a consistent, recognizable voice without relying on traditional branding conventions.

Worked with the team at Needmore Designs in Portland, Oregon to create a new, more expansive website for Four Barrel. This project was extensive and required me to art direct, design, illustrate and project manage.

Updated packaging designs were created in-house by working with the owners, sales team and production team to make the best packaging for everyone who would interact with it.

Merchandise (below) was an integral part of the marketing system. We released roughly 4 limited edition mugs a year, which sold out quickly, as well other drink ware and limited run products.

As Art Director, I was responsible for managing the visual identity as it was represented across all of their cafes and events. This included signage, tents, shipping materials and more (see below).
